Steve McQueen Jaguar XKSS

One of the produced and preserved Jaguars XKSS was owned by Hollywood actor and occasional racer Steve McQueen.

In April 1957 was brought to California Jaguar XKSS by a local dealer (serial number XKSS 713, numerical designation XKD 569). It six-cylinder engine was tuned to 300 hp and acceleration 5s, which even today are excellent data.

First owner of this white Jaguar with red interior was a Californian entrepreneur in building industry James Peterson from Altadena. This motoring fan was also involved in building Riverside International Raceway circuit. Peterson soon sold this car to a local media personality Billy Leydon who often parked this car on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Steve McQueen spotted the car in 1958 and he was so impressed by it that he had to have it. He bought the car for 5000 dollars. His wife Neile recalls this purchase: “I know exactly how much we paid for it. It was me who signed the check!”

Steve McQueen carried out several modifications according to his wishes. He had the whole bodywork painted to British racing green; upholsterer Tony Nancy modified the interior and especially the seats by using black leather. Von Dutch Company carried out repairs of the front compartment to lockable design. McQueen’s Jaguar XKSS was the only one to have wheels polished to high gloss. Although he also owned Ferrari GT250, Steve McQueen really favoured his Jaguar and he even nicknamed it “the green rat”.

Steve McQueen sold his Jaguar to a car collector William Harrah in 1967 under the condition it would be accessible to public in his collection in Reno. McQueen started miss the car ten years later and he wanted to buy it back. Negotiations were very long and the prise of the car was reported to be astronomical.

In 1984, after McQueen’s death, the car was bought by his neighbour Richard Freshman for 147 500 dollars. He sold the car to Lynx Company which started with it thorough reconstruction under the condition that all repairs carried out by McQueen would be preserved. The car was sold in 2000 to its current owners Margie and Robert Petersen who included it in their collection of cars of film stars.
